If you want to start using a metal detector (you can rent them too) start with sandy places such as beaches.  Try after events or at night after everyone is done swimming.   Parks are a good place to look as people do many different activities there.  When the fair  leaves town (unless you get in at night) check under where the rides were people were knocked around a bit.
